Now first of all to you dog lovers,I lke dogs.I just don't like the sons of a brick getting in my garbage.

We have a new neighbor,a couple of dogs,on the loose. The danged things get in my garbage,in my garage and just generally make a nuisance of themselves.

Now I could get out the old trusty 12 gauge and give them a load of double ought. That would be mean because as we know dogs will be dogs.

I have a plan, a bit of doggy soup so to speak. We have some nice beef gravey that will be pitched soon.Yum,yum,a canines delight.I think however a bit of exlax along with some super hot habenero sauce should most likely do the trick. That way I should be able to remind fido, both comming and going so to speak to leave my trash alone.

It's the best thing I can come up short of terminal lead poisoning.Anybody got a grander plan?

Not grander, just simple.

You could always go over and have a chat with your neighbors and advise them of the situation. Maybe they won't let their muts run loose at night!

If that don't work...get some "Fresh" cayenne pepper and dose up some raw burger, (inside the burger, not outside)! After that, the dogs will be sniffing your garbage first for pepper. So now what you do is give you garbage a light sprinkle of the cayenne pepper and that should do the trick! This won't take long to train the dogs not to mess with your garbage.

Good luck with the neighbors!

Well,Mrs Smith already had the chat,to no avail .I send her because I intimidate people.I don't really try to,just the way it works out.

Never the less the chat didn't work.Time for the hot sauce treatment. My luck the danged dogs will like it.Would anybody like a pair of dogs,I'll catch them.:)

Al, don't you have leash laws up there? Down here the racoons get in the trash and they are fair target for the 12 gauge. (oh yeah, I forgot, we can't discharge a firearm in our county)
That is one thing that drives John NUTS, having his garbage thrown about in the morning. He has resorted to putting the cans in the lock up containers cause he got tired of trapping coons.

Around here we get racoons, bears, opossoms, and the occasional fido. But what is really surprizing is the Ravins. They can scatter garbage farther than any other critter here.

Comes to the point where you gotta tie the lids down in town. Outside you have to enclose the works in a shelter.

You gotta do what you gotta do.

Seems kind of cruel to me.
I'm not sure the dogs will put the upset stomache together with eating trash. Like you say dogs will be dogs. The ones that sould be fed hot pepper is the dog owner.
How about a latch on the trash cans so they can't get in?

id chunk rocks at them and/or lay some chicken wire down in the garage hooked to hot wire box. they wont step on more than once. i wouldnt put a latch on it, they shouldnt be in your garage!

oh yeah, i like the exlax idea, let the owners clean up the mess!

Put up an electric fence - they'll hit it a couple of times and then you can take it down.

Funny how folks can be such irresponsible pet owners. Your situation would really piss me off Al.

Hot wire is actually a good way to go, except that you cannot really fence off your entire property.

The hot wire will not harm them, just give them a good zap which they will remember.
The solar chargers used around here dont cost very much. Their is a battery powered one, but it makes a noise. So if the dogs get zapped they will stay away only when they don't hear the buzzing noise. They learn quickly.

We use the solar powered ones for the horses. They work great.

You have to keep the hot wire from becoming grounded. So my advice is to lay a rubber mat down with a few coils of stripped wire taped to it. Place the mat in front of the garbage can and place some tasty stuff within the coils (so it doesn't touch the wires and cook).
If you set it up right, the dogs will have to step on the coils to get at the food and/or the cans.

I am sure you have the stuff laying around to build this Al.

The cayenne pepper wont work, they might even like it.

After that, figure out a way to annoy your neighbors in some small but consistently irritating way :)
Maybe a big ass light directed into their window? On a motion detector so it comes on and off in an irritating way but makes it seem not deliberate?

Fight fire with fire Al

Frans, that is funny as heck! Make it like a 2 million candle light version, and when they complain, just let them know it is time to get their dogs!!!!

Another dog story.About 10 years ago we lived in town next to a little wimpy dog that barked all the time he was out of the house. This annoyed me due to the fact I worked the midnight shift then .

I trotted on down to the local pet store and got a tunable sonic whistle,a loud one.It took a while but I found the pitch that made little Fido just howl. When the little darlin barked ,old Al barked back .I mean I laid to him, till he ran around the yard just yipping. It took a few treatments but I won.:)

As far as the garbage hounds ,I could call the dog warden I suppose.Being somewhat anti establishment,I hate to involve the law in any thing if I can keep from it.

a passive system for you Frans: http://www.sav-a-life.com/Deeralert_intro.htm?gclid=CNWk3ePIy5ACFRz_iAoduSEmPA
