well - it is time the car alarm thingy is about dead.

my car - a 96 with an after market alarm system (installed at dealer - part of package, when the car was new) is not working right.

i have broken both the remotes, the ring that holds them onto the key chain.
the lights no longer flash when the alarm is turned on or off
the horn for the alarm no longer sounds if you set it off.

the only thing is does do it not allow you to start the car unless you unalarm it.

question, (since this is not standard equipment on the car the dealer does not work on)

Where do I go? should i get it FIXED or replaced? (i know more information might be needed)

since the care of the car was with the other person in the relationship (long gone) - i am turning to the next group of people i respect for advise.

thanks

Do you have the manual?

On mine, you can make it silent, light less, amongst other options. This is obtained through a combination of pressing buttons on the remote itself. Maybe your frustration through button pressing achieved this. I don't know, just an idea.

I probably wouldn't pay the dealer to fix it, but maybe the dealer could at least identify the brand, make and model of the alarm for you so you can then find parts and support. But without knowing what you have, you're spinning your wheels.

Once you know the make and model of the alarm, a quick Google search should produce some leads on where to go.

One of the first things I did when I bought my truck was to disable the stupid alarm. The second day I had it, I accidentally hit the panic button on the remote while having lunch in a fast food place. I was perturbed by the rude idiot letting his horn blow out in the parking lot for 10 minutes. Then when I walked out, I realized it was me and I permanently disabled it that afternoon. Alarms are worthless except to irritate people. Nobody will ever lift a finger when they hear a car alarm going off except to flip off the person who allowed it to go off in the first place.

Regardless, if you want a noisemaker on your car then you need to know the make and model in order to fix it.

no room in my trunk for one of those - can it be a small monkey?

I dont have an alarm anymore in my vehicles. When I go away for a few days or park it somewhere suspect I disconnect the wire that runs power to the distributor cap/rotor. no thief is going to pop the hood to do a mechanical check when it doesnt start.

That doesnt help deter break ins to steal contents of course.

Wouldn't help me, either... I don't have a distributor. Or wires.

I am not a diesel expert by far but could you install a switch inline on a battery cable? Remove a fuse from the panel under the dash that is for the ignotion system? My wife has an immobiliser thingie on her car but the switch is under the hood so she never uses it

Paul...

Easiest thing I'd guess would be a hidden kill switch to interrupt the fuel cutoff solenoid on the injection pump.

I could kill the electric lift pump, but it'd go for 15 or 20 miles before it actually stopped.
=)

car alarm broken - need suggestions

i hate car alarms, leave it broken

I have hidden kill switchs on the two Lincoln MK 7s' . Fact is once I forgot where one was myself ,duh .

When I first got those two yuppie mobiles they were on the list of the most stolen .Now I wouldn't even have to lock them up I suppose .Both 84's ,the first year they came out .

Those fields are bare as a bald headed mans head this time of year . Just frozen tundra which is bad if one feels the urge to unrent some beer .:D
