On big saws with long bars, I usually get into trouble by letting the engine "hang" on the bar or trying to push the outer end into the tree with pressure on the handles, both of which tend to put torque on the long bar and distort it slightly. I prefer to do most of the cutting with the part...

I took a palm out of what had been a leaking fish pond in the office of the Dean of Education Department at Western Illinois University once. It was pushing out the sky light. It takes a long time for chain saw exhaust to clear from a room in the center of a large building, especially back in...

You had a spray can? We had the old paint pot that lost it's lid and brush about once a week when you had it hanging upside down against your pant leg. A real mess.

I have never seen a crane job in ND in the past 22 years. Tried to set one up once, as the owner of the property had a Stinger RO. Ended up having someone else do the job. We used Nationals all the time in Ohio in late 60's working for Davey.

The wife and I are planning to visit Hawaii next fall for our 40th anniversary. Hope she lets me try climbing a palm so I can say I have. I will have to get in touch with you if possible. Looks like a nice place. I need to warn you that every time I have gone south in the fall or winter...

I would definitely tell you to visit Russia if you get the chance. I visited Moscow/Zelenegrad area in 2003 as a guest of 4 tree services. It was a very interesting trip.

they don't even take the garage off the side. Looks like that would make it a lot easier. This particular mover has received a speeding ticket 45 in a 25 mph zone, with a story and half house in tow. They do a lot of work. These houses were in the 2011 flood, water up to about top of...

Here are some pics from some of our recent work. The first is some pruning done to be able to move the flooded houses in the background. Need 32 feet clearance high, the sides will just miss the cottonwood trunk and just graze the boxelder across the street. The next 2 are from a...

Lightning struck Ash removal. Yesterday. Split in 3 pieces. Small notch on bottom, plunge cut to establish hinge and cut out through back to prevent barber chair. Spit section from portion that was laying on ground is under trunk. Here is entire tree loaded and ready to go.

carl, one of our neighbors had a fan off an old airboat, with a ring of jets around the outside that sprayed diesel fuel. It would burn a hole through a big brush pile in a hurry.

Squisher, That National Crane is exactly like the ones we used in the 60's with Davey. I had a Prentice for a while, rated at 5 tons. It was all electric solenoid valves, no gently feathering anything. I have never seen a crane job done since I have been in the Dakotas. I am sure some...

Jay, the lion is not even in town, so I am pretty safe now. Think they come back on May 11 and then have 30 day quarantine before they are out for the public.

Here is a little job we did today, between building cat pedestals at the zoo. Elm with a sewer collapse under it, probably related to the 2011 flood. Dropped and cleaned up in one hour. All but trunk in the chip truck. This is when the BC 2000 is great. Finally some good weather, although...

Here's a photo of my number one helper (chipper operator) and our new loader. He is getting acquainted with it so we don't have to have an operator from maintenance load a few logs for us and take them away from their own work. Pretty slick compared to the old 70's model it replaced.

Not normal. Last year the farmers were seeding at this time. Should be having highs in the 50's. And yes we are sick of it. It started snowing 6 months ago. We usually have 4 seasons. Record low is -63, record high is 124, set in 1935 and 36. So normally a variety of weather. We will...
