The East Sierra escarpment juts straight up out of the Owens Valley to the west, and to the east the White Mountains do the same. Rising to over 14,000 feet. There's no foot hills, so to speak. It's steep, dry and rugged. With the thunderheads ever-present it wasn't as hot as it sure could have been. So that made it nice for us Coasties. And again, the clouds made for some nice landscapes and panoramas.
We covered a lot of ground in the few days we spent there. East of Bishop we toured the Buttermilk Road. Cool rocks and four-wheeling there. We got so far up I wondered if we were going to make it back. Straddling washouts and going over big boulders.
There were more lakes up there than I ever knew about. Convict Lake was the most beautiful of all, I think.
The geology of the region is wild mix of volcanism and metamorphic formation. Makes for highly varied colors in the rocks.
On the way back to the coast we veered off the highway to go see Bodie. An old ghost town. Amazingly intact most of it. It was said they mined over 100 million in gold before it shutdown. If you've never been to Bodie I highly recommend it.
Enjoy!
