Saw this on another thread and thought it was worthy of it's own...

[My new book] will be specifically about the redwood. Not about logging per-say. More about the trees themselves and their habitat. Of which I have spent a life career working in, studying and recording. So many things will be presented about the trees in details that have never been presented before.

Considering my background some people will automatically think its going to be slighted with opinion throughout. And I do state some opinion, but my aim with the book is to be as fair and accurate as I can with the issues. It has been a work in progress for over 40 years.

This book is titled, Coast Redwood, Tree of Dreams and Fortune. It will debut at TCI next year.

Gerry, I'm so glad to hear about this! A few years ago I bought Larry Eifert's The Distinctive Qualities of Redwoods and have read that little $4 book MANY times. I like to look at it before I head up north.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one to say it, but I'm glad to hear you're writing this book!

Well thank you, Nick.

The thought of doing this new book on the redwoods actually came to me in April of 1973. I was in the top of an old growth redwood on Joy Ridge in Sonoma County. The view of the coastline from this tree was fantastic, and just being in the top and seeing the view got me to thinking, "Man, I ought to write a book about the redwoods!"

Alas I pursued a professional approach with my writing and publishing endeavors. Now with it all behind me I finally have the time and resources to do this book I thought of 39 years ago. It will be the same size as High Climbers and have just as many if not more pictures. Featuring all the largest redwoods in our northerly parks.

Terri and I hiked at least a couple hundred miles of trails in the last few years getting many of the pictures that are going to be used in the book. Though I do have some old films I'll use too.

Sometime ago Willie mentioned something to the effect of this being the ultimate trail guide. Yes and no. I highlight the trails that have the best trees and just skim the rest with brief descriptions.

Half of the book is going to be about the features in these trees and the groves themselves. There's been so much left untold. Intrinsic qualities that extend beyond the surface of what we see.

Most of the body text is done. Just needs a good proof reader. Most of the images are in hand now. but still always looking for more. I figure January the page layout will begin. In the meantime I'll have to get quotes from printers and shippers and decide which direction to go from there.

After this is done I'll start the revision on Fundamentals. It really needs it bad.

Always something to do.

I cannot wait. I have never climbed anything as magnificent as a Redwood and can only imagine the intense thrill. Thanks Jer!

There is nothing better than when Jerry puts out a new book and this one sounds like it is going to be another true winner. I can't wait to read it next year!

And I can just imagine how great the Revised Fundamentals book will be as well.

Sort of. It's up to Jer when the next printing gets ordered. Usually we consider the time it takes to print the order, how much inventory we have left, and the average of orders we'd be filling. If we were to get low on inventory while he is updating the book we probably wouldn't re-order, or maybe just reorder a small amount.

You'll need to set up a Paypal account befpre releasing the next book, to make it easier to pay when ordering.

Paypal would certainly make it easier for us foreigners to get a copy.Finding a "Western Union" is not impossible, however they can be scarce outside the biggest of Cities.

It sure would be nice, not to have to send you an envelope with cash like last time.
And send me 3 of those new Redwood books as soon as they get finished, please:)
