Time Lapse Tree Work

Heres a thread for some time lapse videos.

I made my first one today, the camera died a bit before we finished but most of the work got done. I will have to find some way to get it to last longer.

Some technical notes: This is one 5mp picture every 3 seconds, for 4369 pictures (8.3gb). So it is 218 minutes or just under 4 hours of time compressed into 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Each picture gets 1/30th of a second. The timelapse was done w/ Google Picasa in groups of 1000. Basic iMovie edit put the clips together. Contour Roam camera.

Looks top notch. :) I like it!

If I had the energy my self it would be nice to slow certain segments down, then edit the clips into a cohesive film with variable speed. Not a criticism by any means but something I might try in the future.

Another thing i would like to do better is get the entire job. Jump out early and get the trucks pulling in all the way through the final rake and the trucks pulling out. But thats a battery issue for me.
 
i like doing time lapse. my camera has an interval shoot function that makes it easy to do, tho i do find battery life to be a problem on longer jobs. ive put this up in the tree felling vids before, but here is one i did with a mix of time-lapse and regular speed like you are talking about.

ya, we own it and we use it just about every day. we have a chip box and two open top boxes. the truck is a little under powered tho, F650.
 
I'm thinking that some video editing software has a speed up function, I think mine does. Not sure if it is just for editing purposes, or you can speed up and upload in that form?

I can speed up video with iMovie. Or i can change the rate at which the slides move through my photo editing software. I guess it might make more sense to make the slides go slower for the raw video file and then accelerate the majority of the clip with iMovie.

Did an ash removal and put a video together. There are a couple of breaks in it, the cam fell over once (mini-twisty-tripod on a wood fence:) ) and another time I shut it off to save battery while a rigging thing was taking forever. Once again the battery died before we got the spar down, I either need to work faster or find a way to make the battery last longer. Here it is:

i have a pentax digital cam, cant remember the model but it is water/dust/shock proof. it has a built in interval shoot setting, and a time lapse video function. for all the vids ive done so far, i use the interval shoot and used the software included to make the pics into vid on my laptop. this lets me tweek the speed of the vid. also, the interval shoot has more options as far as frequency of frame.

I am using a Contour Roam Helmet Cam. It retails for $189 but I just checked Amazon has an incart promo that brings the price down to $108 shipped. Just add to cart and then checkout you will see the discount.

It does 720 - 1080p full video w up to 170degree wide angle lens. It also does the interval photos (5 megapixels) with options for 1 picture every 1,3,5,10,20,60 seconds. The battery life is good, around 4 hours with either pictures or video. Storage is on micro sd - I have a 32gb, which in almost any recording mode is more space than the battery can fill. One downside is it has no viewfinder, so you either have to test the shot and view on the laptop or just go with your gut on the field of view. Another downside is that it wont record while plugged in, so for timelapse you are limited by battery life.

As a helmet cam I really like it. Sleek, fits on the side of the helmet and it has lots of different mounts. It is waterproof, shock resistant (I have dropped it a few times on pavement and banged it up in the tree a bit, no worse for the wear), dust proof etc.. mil810 i think it is.

It just has the one button, its a slide forward switch that powers it on and starts recording, it is big and could be used with winter gloves no prob. It uses a standard screw in tripod and the lens rotates to set FOV based on what mount or tripod you are using. It as a leveling laser and everything.

For $100 you cant go wrong.

That looks like a nice unit. I will bet the battery would last for the entire job as well. It probably runs while plugged into AC too I would imagine. The interval looks right form 1 second to 24hours. I like the idea of a dedicated time lapse cam that you could integrate with footage from the helmet cam.

I will add that to my wish list, thanks for the lead!

It is worth noting that the other Brinno models interval only goes as low as 5 seconds on the custom settings.

I cant seem to find the TLC200 for sale. I found a preorder for it. Have any info or sales link Brendon?

At one point there were 4 climbers in that tree. Was a 72" dbh Eastern Cottonwood. Really big tree! 5 digit price tag big
 
wow! nice. this is another one ive posted before. not nearly as big, but a fun one to do.
