Thanks everyone for chiming in. This dinky holly was just practice for a much bigger one I have to work on, with more delicate shrubs underneath. I agree holly is not very good hinge wood, but it's great for snap cuts! Decided to go with the sawhorse backup cuz it was quick and simple. But I lucked out and didn't even need it.

He wanted the tree to stay on the stump, so it wouldn't drop on the shrubbery in front of it. The wide open face was to keep the face from closing in an attempt to have the hinge remain intact.

Not rocket science, is it?

There's a big difference between lucky and good in this biz... that was a good cut.. nothing lucky about it
 
Please explain how a snipe would keep the tree from leaving the stump?

IMO that would have to be an awful deep snipe, also known as an open face:D
