I’m probably wrong, but is that pouch made from a chin strap of a football helmet?

That is exactly what it is. They can be hard to find anymore but I picked up a mess of them years ago and that's what I have.

I taught High School in 1978 and 1979 and the coaches were changing over to the double strap chin straps... Two on each side. That old style single on each side they were getting rid of. So when they stripped the helmets I just took a bag down there and got a bunch of them. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
