How'd it go today?

I sure hope its not lead, should just be whatever epoxy paint Bandit uses, but then again my chipper was re painted atleast once and zero care was taken so the odds of it being lead are higher than factory

had a lot of honey, 2 cough drops yesterday, woke up this morning and my throat feels fine, might not even be the smoke, but it sure feels like it, that stuff had me wanting to vomit for most of the time I was out there welding on it
What were you welding again? Was it galv under paint? Don’t weld it if it makes you sick

back of the chipper, lots of paint, not galv, just me being stupid, throat feels fine now but I did feel sick for a couple days, we've also had some stomach bugs and stuff going around town so it may have been a total coincidence but I doubt it, seriously felt like I swallowed a cactus and got it stuck in my throat

Where was your smoke shifter?
exactly where flushcut said it is, never said I was smart lol

Polyurethane paint gives off hydrogen cyanide and some other nasty stuff.
this could explain the killer sore throat and the fact I've had a lot of mucus type stuff causing me to cough before I talk since I did that welding

thanks for the heads up, gonna get me a shop fan, even tho I was outside I still need one apparently

here's what I was working on, it looks terrible but I was making due with what I have, the black parts are super thin sheet metal meant to cover up a lot of torch work I had to do, and it kept burning through so I had a very hard time getting welds to work out on it, but the rest is welded more than good enough

infeed tray was bent and stuff kept getting caught in/on it which got really aggravating with pay checks standing around watching me untangle stuff
this chipper needs some work, its ugly but man it works good, one day I plan to get a 15 or 18" brand new and restore this one for either a second crew or a backup, but for now I'm making due, won't catch me selling this one any time soon, it has sentimental value and it works too dang good to get rid of it

its a 2002, been repainted atleast once since then, I've done nothing but abuse it for 3 years, no clue the exact amount its chipped in that 3 years but its a lot, same knives it had when I got it, just sharpened every now and then and it chips really nice still

last I saw the hour meter work was 3 years ago and it said something like 3000 or 6000 hours, forgot what exactly but thats when it broke, and its not the original hour meter so It's safe to assume this machine has over 10,000 hours on it, got a new clutch like a month before I bought it, I've sharpened the feed wheels, rebuilt most of the hydraulic system besides the pump, engine has ZERO blowby, and I mean ZERO whatsoever, does have a few drips here and there but nothing a well placed pile of chips can't fix, the chute swivel mechanism is totally chooched, as is the chute end but none of that bothers me enough to fix it, we don't adjust the chute except for maybe 1 job every 6 months or so

I grease it when I remember to, oil change about the same, that cummins runs super nice and clean, the oil I changed at the last change was 2 years old and still had a hint of honey color to it along with zero glitter and it was still super slick, nothing like any other oil change I've ever done, honestly surprised me considering it was atleast 10 oil changes late

literally the only issues I've ever had:
1 blown hydraulic hose, replaced all the hoses that week for about $200
bent chute end (it was that way when I got to a job one morning, assuming it got bound up on the back of the bucket truck)
some lights out
one tiny coolant hose which cost me about $5 to fix
and the starter relay is on its way out, never not started but it takes a few clicks, other than that, its cherry, between purchase price, tires and other maintenance I have about 19-20K into it, it paid for itself just in saved dump bills in the first 2 months I owned it so it owes me absolutely nothing, and it is the LAST machine I would ever get rid of, costs me just a few dollars a month to sit when it doesn't work and it prints money when its busy, best investment I've ever made, similar to my dump trailer

Same knives for 3 years, that must be some kind of record
yep, anvil is wore slap out but the knives are still in spec and I keep them sharp, actually compared them with my buddies 12X which had brand new knives from the dealer, hadn't even touched a piece of wood yet, close enough for what I'm doing and the chips coming out are super nice, finally have a few little dings that I'm not comfortable trying to get out myself so I will probably order new knives, bolts and anvil all one one shot next time I have to pull them out, I'm SUPER careful what gets chipped, much to my amazement I've never had any hidden rebar, bricks, fence posts, etc get chipped yet, besides the one barbed wire fence that got wrapped up on a land clearing job for my neighbor, nothing ever goes well when working for neighbors

and I'm not running the knives til they are dull either, they will still 100% cut you if you run your finger down them when I flip them

I'm honestly not sure what the deal is with this thing, its some magical carpet chipper or something, bought it off a Mexican that was bidding a stump job for a tree I left, customer chased him down to get him to bid the stump because we saw him driving into the neighborhood, he saw me loading my trailer with brush and logs on a 100+ degree day with no machine, up a 20 degree hill about 100ft, he was like "you nee a chibbar, I sell you mine" and that was that, I bought it basically site unseen the same week for 15K cash, asked him what engine it had and he said "I dunno it just works" and he wasn't wrong, that thing eats day in and day out, calls in sick literally never, been amazing to work on and use, needs autofeed but thats it

I'm contemplating doing a drivetrain swap on my dump truck, want a 13 speed and a little more power, 6V53 detroit would be a sick upgrade I think, and cheap which would leave me with a mint condition 190hp DT360 that would fit in the bandit...

no, its a bad idea, I don't need a 190hp chipper, buuuuut, I could make it happen if I wanted to, nothing wrong with the 4BT but I'm questioning weather or not I'm related to Tim the tool man Taylor because everything needs more power!

50 RR ties is no walk in the park. I hope you can load/unload with a machine :).
Of course. Loaded with a giant RR grapple truck amd unloaded with a big skid steer. They had them banded in two bundles. Took me longer to chain down than load. I’m hoping not to have to do much manual moving of these things I’ve got the mini to set them in place.

Nothing exciting. My college student short-timer has been a lot of help. Another day of catching up on overdue things. I'm gaining space from processing firewood and moving dry slabs into a cleaned out shed. Lots of weeding to prepare for the wet season (more gravel and chip mulch to spread).
Load of wood hitched up to take to Miriam's house. Considering if I want to add a bit of gravel and move a large shrub for a circle driveway, where its already nearly drive- through. Optometrist time.
