Caring for Mature Landscape Trees
This meeting will focus on keeping our tree heritage alive. The issues surrounding tree preservation will be explored by the speakers, and then discussed in regard to specific trees in the surrounding area. It should be useful to any arborist or landscaper who makes decisions about building and landscaping around mature trees.
What conditions do trees need to survive in the built environment? How do you improve health once compromised? How do you factor in structural conditions? How do you maintain a tree that has been compromised by past limb or trunk failures? How do you weigh targets versus benefits? Are Heritage trees worth the liability? Large old trees provide huge benefits to the community, as well as property owners, in shade production, esthetics and other environmental resources. Yet large old trees become more difficult to maintain in the urban landscape due to potential failure, root disturbance and disease susceptibility. Arborists are often asked to give their opinion about a tree once a partial failure has occurred. The easy answer is to remove the tree due to liability - but the tree may have many years of life left if a more thoughtful approach is
taken. A panel will explore options for helping the owner decide what's best for them and the tree.
