Looks like the grain angled 'backward' on both sides. Spiral grain can bite one in the buttocks, particularly with high stumpshot. 1" of SS should do. Higher backcuts should have good reason for them.

The whole tree was angled backwards! I did an open face cut so the hinge would have max travel before closing or breaking. Seems to have worked because it fell right on the gun even though I thought the lay would be off to the left a bit. Stayed on the stump and never came tight on the retainer line.

Of course it would have been quite a bit different if I hadn’t brushed it out first.
