Shit can still go sideways with a rope or cable. You can do everything "right" and still have things go south.

Questions for learning, not arguing. If all your rigging, cutting, and weight estimation is correct, what gets you? Bad wood you can’t see?

It seems like to lose one over backwards or sideways you’d have to cut your hinge off or it fail.

On that note, I did cut a hinge off once. Limb tied saplings in a burn…I wasn't careful because I kinda knew it wasn’t going anywhere and was small enough to muscle.

Momentum/ speed helps poor hinges.

Pull hard and fast enough and the tree goes where you pull it.

We weakened and ripped down a horrible maple against the lean with a small skidder's skookum winch.
No hinge. Too rotten.

The tree itself. I have pulled trees out of the ground after they have been faced up and back cut, I’ve had the top break out while pulling, I’ve had trees break the hinge due to unforeseen rot, and a tree has barberchaired on me. These are some of the things that will get you if you are not constantly paying attention. The more you cut the more likelihood something is going to go sideways. Just the law of averages. IMO.
