Silver Maple Specialists?

With all these silver maples lately, it's becoming something of a specialty. After being impressed seeing us take out that HUGE silver maple last week, the next door neighbor wanted us to take his 3' diameter, 65' silver out, as well as taking limbs from a neighbor's tree off his roofline -- another silver maple and a mulberry. Fighting 25mph sustained winds -- American flag next door was standing straight out. Made climbing & rigging a bit tricky, especially with all the rigging work in close proximity to power lines, shed, clothesline, and the house itself. Got her down, brush chipped, and loaded on the log truck in ~4 hours.

Nothing like getting next door jobs! Or even several on the block!

Word of mouth is the BEST advertising there is!

Behold: Stumpzilla

Meanwhile, I was faced with Stumpzilla next door -- the HUGE silver maple we had taken down a week ago, 6-7' diameter at ground level, now the planter bed it had been in has been removed & dug out, so now it is 18-24" above grade, with root flare going out 16'. In 4 hours, I succeeded in grinding out a U-shape around the main stump body, so now we're essentially down to the main stump. The owner of the property has a Bobcat on site, so at least they're moving out grindings and dirt as I go, although it does slow down progress having to back out & wait for the Bobkitty to clear things out at intervals. Today I tackled the main stump body, creating a mountain of grindings. The original deal was to haul away all grindings, but the owner's having mercy on us and just adding the grindings to his dirt pile from the septic work. That was rather distracting background goings on, with concrete saws going and an excavator scooping out some rather rank... filth out of the ground, them pumping it out, etc. P1300768.jpg P1300766.jpg P1300877.jpg P1300862.jpg P1300890.jpg P1300889.jpg

Yea - you need a bigger grinder.

Those smaller ones have their place but man are they way slower.

You are a better man than me.
I would have subbed that one out.

Going to post tropical trees, so far nothing big, but they are different. These ones are up for some deadwooding and slight reduction over the road. Poinciana

Cool.
I like seeing some of the trees that we don't have here in the cold North.

Leaves are slow to come out this spring, they had gale after gale in March, laden with salt spray.

Good picture, Robert....crispy dead one.

We dropped that spar into the lake today...had two cameras running, got some decent footage. Here is a quick short clip from the dock cam:

Kicked up some mud and a shamu wave for the crowd. Loved it Gary. Someday I’ll get to float a log. It didn’t stick, did it?

Sean wins the cupcake...the spar DID get stuck in the bottom mud. We had to pull some shenanigans to get it free...good day with the trees.

It reminded me of the splash Shamu made at Seaworld when I was a kid!

Shamu made a bigger splash... it drenched the front 1/2 dozen rows!

Rafted the logs, drug them across the lake and straight onto a trailer...straight to the mill. I'll get picts of that up later...been a LONG day today.

I got some good footage of the raft tow...later. This will have to do for now.:D

Gary do you think a Humboldt would’ve changed the sticking? Or was it pretty much inevitable with the length of the spar and the bank?

Maybe....but I think it was just gonna happen...should have strapped a 50 gallon plastic drum to the top, I guess.

I think a stout piece of plywood would have made it easier to free the spar from the ground side of the spar...could have felled it onto plywood. Hard to know...making it up as we go.

Nice work Gary.

Did it take much unsticking?

Here are a couple things of shots of a pine dismantle yesterday. Everything rigged apart from the stem. Due to a chipper clutch problem, all the brash was stacked and the stem felled onto it then a grab lorry came in the afternoon.

Pretty nice day and lovely property and views over the fjord.

Rich

Humboldt would have made no difference, with the top of the tree gone, there is no wind resistance, so the wole stick just splats down.

Apart from the EXTREME coolness factor of pulling a spar with a jet ski, why didn't you just wedge it over?

I guess I know, it wouldn't have looked near as good on video, that one really made my day.

Can't wait to tell the guys I know somebody who pulls trees with jet skis:lol:

Nice view, Rich.
I really love those pines.
When we did our Hurtigruten trip last fall, we saw some really ancient ones in the deep fjords.
They were so wonderful.
