You just surpassed my knowledge of engines and electronics.

But what if the engine is on but you DON'T want the inverter on?
 
Turn it off with the built in switch on the inverter, is what I did...but I had it in the cab.

There are circuits that are always powered, even if the ignition switch is off, and there are circuits that are powered only when the ignition switch is in the acc or on position. You'll have to get a bit of knowlege to work out the wiring and fusing, Nick. You need a circuit that has capacity for the amperage you require...or wire direct to the battery, fuse it and install the switch you spoke of...but NEVER forget to turn it off, or you'll have a dead battery soon.

There are automatic switching units...but I hesitate to try to explain them to you :).
 
Since I have a battery draining cabin heater in my truck, I have had an extra battery installed under the driver's seat, with a simple setup that charges the battery, but only lets it discharge through the heater and the light in the truck bed ( which we always forget to turn off).
