Movie theaters going extinct?

A few of us here watched "The Interview" online the day it was released. I found it to be a great way to watch a new movie on opening day. In this day and age of high tech connectivity, is there a need for movie theaters any more? Just as easy to have friends over to see a new movie as it is to meet them at the theater. Cook your own pop corn. Where's the downside? Unless you own a theater:/:

The Interview was $6.00 which is 1/2 the cost of 1 ticket at a theater. I'd gladly pay $12.00 to see a new movie at home. Movie makers might make less money due to fewer tix sold as multiple people watch on one computer/tv, but perhaps lower distribution and other costs would make up for it. What say you.

No need for me. I hate the prices and the noisy people/kids. I'll probably never go to a theater again.

I'm not usually too forward thinking, but with this, it's hard to imagine they will exist in say, 5 years.

Strangely my wife coerced me into going to the cinema tonight, a small rural one holds about 125 people.
I've cut some trees for the owner/manager, nice guy. He usually stands in front of the screen before the main picture and gives a little speech.i don't know if it will continue after his retirement. The local council often pump money in to keep these things going as a local amenity.
As I understand it the large multiplexes are doing very nicely, people still like to go out, and what with the food, booze and more comfort at these places it still seems to fulfill a need.

Mick, what booze can you get to drink at a movie theatre? is there a bar in the lobby? Beer and popcorn seems like a good combo.

In a state where weed is legal in the US, I bet a smoking room with a screen would bring customers. The munchies would add to business as well.

In the cinema near me, you sit, have waitresses come and serve you beer. Can even get a full meal in a cinema nowadays. Still to expensive and I havnt been for a year but do enjoy going. Like to venture out the house with the missus now and again (without kids) makes us realise we do actually still like each other.

Sounds like you guys have some cool theaters. Here, its just large, mostly empty multiplexes.

Nah we have ordinary cinemas but also have super cinemas with all this fang dangled fancy stuff. Super cinemas are more expensive so we only go if we're going to use the facilities, otherwise why would we spend more for less:? I think cinemas are offering this type of service to bring in more custom, popcorn and frozen coke is no longer enough for some

It seems like it could be a bother to be watching a movie of the person sitting next to you is chomping down on a meal, and you are also getting the aroma from it too. Getting meals on a train can be like that too. How far apart are the seats at the super cinemas, and do they have tables with them as well?

Yeh small tables and also boards either side of both seats so it's a secluded section for you and your guest. Quite personal actually. I'm sure this is the reason movies nowadays seem to be 10x louder than they used (over exaggeration) but I think it's to compensate for the clatter of cutlery and so on. I find it quite a pleasant experience although don't do it often.

I'm 29 and haven't been to the movies in 10 years. I don't think I've even rented a movie in the last 5-6, all online for free!!!

I've never done it myself, I'm not really into cinema going, but I'm told, in the large cinemas in bigger towns, they have bars in the lobby and if you have an expensive seat you can have a kind of waitress service

I went to the first Imax theatre to open here once, other than that I haven't been to a theatre for a long time. Wasn't a Dirty Harry movie but a Charles Bronson one.

I used to love drive in's, there's one still going near here but I'm over that now. It's too easy to just sit here and watch whatever I like when I want to, have a beer and not worry about getting home and that's how a lot of people feel.

The small theatres have just about all gone now. You can go to big ones but too many people for me and I have a nice chair and can do without gourmet food and champagne brought to my seat. Probably impress the girls more than a trip to the drive in though.:laughing6:

I had a funny episode occur in Northern California. My truck broke down on the freeway at night. It was well before the cell phone era, and the only place to call for a tow was a drive in theatre just off the road, showing porno. A short walk from the freeway and nothing else around, just hills. I guess that's how they could get away with showing porn there. I went to the drive in and asked the girl if I could go in and use a phone. No problem, but calling up the tow dispatcher, I learned that the movie sound at a drive in not only comes over those speakers that you hang on the window, or it could have been at that place you tuned in over your car radio, but the sound also comes through over the phone. While I was trying to speak with the lady tow truck dispatcher, she was getting all this having wild sex moaning coming over the phone as well. Sort of embarrassing, I had to explain. She was cool about it and laughed. Maybe I should have described the scene? Never forget that.

There is a cool one here called Movie Tavern, where you can order a full meal, booze, pop corn, whatever you want. I normally prefer going there over a normal movie theatre, but I don't mind either and enjoy going to the theatre. Its a different experience for sure, and one I normally enjoy.

Not just movie theaters, but tv as we know it as well. Things like Hulu& Netflix make regular tv almost a nuisance. You have to be at the tv at a certain time on a particular day to watch what you want instead of being able to watch anything at anytime you like with the Internet.
I've cut cable because u can watch anything online and I hardly go to the movies anymore because unless it's like a big time movie it'll be in the RedBox in 30 days. Or you can illegally download it right away
