I have seen that photo, or one like it before at the Redwoods Regional Logging Expo.

You can see the hatchet/axe hanging off his belt.

What amazes me is that using a hand saw and an axe they would make that cut.

I imagine frantic cutting and chopping just to prevent barber chair.
 
Barberchair isn't as much of a concern as you might think. A large straight tree was chosen for spars, cut your horizontal with the saw undermining the CG, chop out the rest of the face, move to the side and saw up the back cut. I have one of the "handsaws" as you call it. It's a 38" whip, takes two hands to run it.
Yes your heart is beating frantic like, but it's from the massive effort in topping a tree in that manner. Trust me.:evil:
