With a line in place a climber should be able to repel 35-40 feet in less than 5 seconds. If you go fast enough you can get past the fire before it begins to affect your rope. I certainly wouldn't want to be fidgeting around if I were in that position.
The scene at 2:30 is exactly why I refuse to cut anything if three guys are pulling on the tag line. It is also why I never put a tag line in anything any more (unless I can set it, make the cut, then go pull it over myself).
This was one of the biggest factors in me getting my first bucket truck with a material handler. The absolute worst part of my job as a climber was having to depend on some half wit on the ground to safely rig down a tree, all while he tried to kill me in new and imaginative ways on a daily...
That's all I saw as well. Guy had no idea what the risks were so he was afraid of everything. He was trying to figure it out as he went because he sure didn't know what to do next.
What I don't understand is why he was so hell bent on taking such a big piece anyway. For all the time it took to rig that mess, he could have false crotched it off itself in 2-3 cuts with a lot less drama.
