What Am I Seeing Here?

I've looked at this picture a few times when it's come up on the rotator...

I'm guessing it's pinned to keep the gap from spreading? Does that work? It's a neat thing to look at in any case. I'd like to have that tree here :^)

Yea - That's Nate in Germany IIRC. Just an old school form of cabling. Probably as least 50 years old. He pops in every one in a while.
