We have some of those around here as well. Being a tree guy, I notice them right away. But I have mentioned them to people who have lived here all their lives and most have never noticed them.

Last time we had a hurricane warning for this area, they took all the limbs off.

We have some here that look like pines, some that look more like fir like the one shown in this thread, and even some that look like palms.

A lot of board feet in those pinus celullaris. 
I think they are more noticable than a plain old tower. The 200-300 foot tree usually sticks out, especially in the Northeast.
