-Looking for suggestions on books/courses to beef up my knowledge that are tried and true.

For purely ID purposes, the Audubon field guides are nice. Good pictures that show what's necessary to make an ID. That's more for native tree though, and won't necessarily show the weird stuff people put in their yards.
Leaf being the easiest yet it's seasonal , Bark and Silhouette work year round .... then there's Twig , the (very) small Bible that's the go to is called "The Winter Tree Finder" , structured as a flow chart
