Gary, the Kurz story is detailed in the book I mentioned. It is extremely gripping. He tried so hard for so long, as did his rescuers, that in the end, according to the book and disagreeing with the wiki entry, he just suddenly died as he had pushed far past every mortal limit to try to survive. His body had absolutely nothing left and it just turned off. It was insane.
