How does a tree grow in a rock???

Best I figure boss, Seed lands in a crack in the rock, erosion has already supplied some sandy soil. Crack also traps moisture. Tree starts to grow. If the crack is big or deep enough through expansion, the tree lives a nice long life. Also adds it's own needles to the pot for decomposition to add nutrients to the soil. If the crack is too small and the tree becomes root bound, it dies sooner than others.
You see it a lot up here, pines, manzanita, oaks... Especially in Yosemite Valley. Pines just growing on the side of a rock that is darn near vertical.
 
Wow Stephen, that was some video, nearly moved me to tears, the beauty of it. I really really really need to visit Yosemite at some point.

no, makes the roots much more efficient, making the possibility of trees growing out of small cracks possible. We see it here on some rocky hillsides and cliffs, places seemingly impossible to support trees.

Wife and I watched it togeter and remembered the times we've been there together.
I like the spring for the full waterfalls, but the colors of fall are hard to beat.

After I told my wife where you live, her comment was: " I wish our backyard looked like that"

Seems like he was aware that it was going to happen, or he would have got his saw stuck.

That moment when a stormfelled tree, that is still attached to the rootwad, swithes from top bind to bottom bind as you work your way down it, is something to look out for.
