I have 1st hand account that one Manufacturer produces 100 000 Leaded throw bags annually.
So my estimate of 60 Tons is actually low to moderate.

Good on Petzl! Throw ball manufacturers will need to rethink their enviro-policy and
how they are perceived by the community and world at large.

You could make one easily Thomas. I will walk you through it if you want. < $80
Need only a few wrenches

Yah its about time I get off my keyster and make one.:)

I tell you one other thing that one Dave is holding sure looks the part especially compared to a clumsy bit of rubber tubing
at the end of some poles.

I'm in man! The accuracy of long barrel cannot be argued.
Cheers

Buy:

4' piece of pre-thread 1-1/2 NPT inch black gas pipe

1-1/2" female/female T-valve with a reduction to 1/8" NPT on the odd side

1-1/2" close nipple

1-1/2" NPT female/female brass ball valve

1-1/2" NPT male > 1-1/4" NPT female reducer (if you cant find a male>female reducer use a male>male and then a 1-1/4" female>female coupling)

1-1/2" NPT female end cap

2' piece of pre-thread 1-1/4" NPT black gas pipe

1 tube pipe dope

Screw it all together

Basically follow this diagram, but reduce the barrel to fit the ropeknight.

Wouldn't a manometer be a good thing?

You guys probably call that a pressure gauge.............................?

Makes sense. But how much of the swan-killing lead is from throwballs?

Missing the big picture gentleman. What is the most recognizable symbol of America? Bald Eagle right. Birds of prey hawks, osprey, owls etc all eat smaller birds that ingest the Lead shot used in there stomachs to help with digestion.
Every year thousands of pounds of Lead being added to the already 100's of thousands of pounds of LEad.
serious shite.

We outlawed lead in 1991 for waterfowl hunting here in the US, took Canada till 1999.
As to birds of prey and other predators, DDT is the major cause for the huge population drops through the 70's.
Now we have so many predators both avian and mammal that small game is at a all time low.

Upper predatory species is what you are probably missing more than anything. Wolves, large cats.... Having those will help increase those populations of animals you describe.

http://www.floridasportsman.com/2012/03/13/lead-ban-requested-by-groups/

Btw we are the upper predators and doctors say not to eat large predatory fish more than two or three times a month.
Just to give you an idea of how toxic Lead really is. Now imagine 5lb bird with one lead shot in comparison to 200lb male nakid ape who eats fish once a week.
Now is the LEad issue sinkin in. Pun intended or not!

In the grand scheme of things lead from throwballs is probably a minor pollution factor. That being said I'm all in favor of cleaning up/reducing/reusing any kind of pollution possible. It takes a lot of small steps to make a big difference.

Here pregnant women are warned against eating fattish fish ( salmon ,trout, herring etc) from the Baltic.

But because of mercury not lead.

And the decline of the grey eagles was caused by mercury and DDT, not lead.

The amount of lead from shot is near to nothing, compared to what we released when gasoline was leaded.

Wesspur

If a person is really bothered by it start buying your throw bags from Wesspur, they are already using nontoxic shot to fill theirs. And at a price competitive with lead bags I might add for a top quality product.
