As hatred would have it, much less an involvement based upon camaraderie. The French became participants in the American revolution purely to serve their own aspirations, pertaining to their severe disliking of their arch enemy, the British. Once the British were done, then the French might well have ended up attacking the Americas themselves, if they hadn't become so confounded broke by the end of the conflict. The French crown didn't want thanks, shortly after they wanted their heads! In retrospect if it was at all possible, they would have wanted to take it all back.
