Mentors/mentoring

As far as woodworking goes, I used to go around to visit famous guys, see their work to get inspired, I guess. One guy in London, he opened his door with his foot behind it, stuck his head out long enough to ask me why he would want to show his shop to anyone else in or about to enter the trade? I couldn't think of a reply fast enough before he shut the door. He seemed kind of bitter.

I ran into that all the time in machine shops, God it was bad! They would think they were indispensable because they were the ONLY ones that knew how to run that machine and make the programs work.
Really pissed them off when they got sick for two or more days and came back to find I'd been running parts on THEIR machine while they were gone!

Nobody is indispensable. I got that learned into me about 15 years ago, the hard way. ;)
