Jacking Old Growth

Had a unit with some bigger trees in one corner. Short ground so we had to jack em. Saw is modded 3120 with 50" cannon.

What is "short ground"?

Ground is broken up by ridges and draws that make it so there isnt a lay for the tree. Any djrection the trees would go without jacks would end up breaking the trees in half, and sometimes worse, much worse.

Got it...makes sense. I assume that is a "Silvey"...that is the only name I know for jacks.

Aye. Silveys. One pic is of self contained "hijacker" unit. The other pics are the backpack rams (these are the bigger version) with seperate pump and hoses. With these multiple jacks, which are called rams, maybe used at the same time. We have used up to three rams at once. At 62 T per ram thats about 180T of available lift.

No messing around there... nice job.. I have never jacked a tree.... that first stump made the 50" bar look like 28-32"... good job, thanks for sharing

Actually, up here, most trees we eork on are 36 minus. Just have the occasional pig thrown in. The you can get those 48-60" buggers.

Gypo, why one with a small Jack seat cut out, leaving good wedging wood at the back of the tree, which you used,

and the other with a full gap, which doesn't lend itself to wedging, as back up to the jack, and to prevent wind gusts damaging the jack?

Maybe just wind conditions???

Hey Gyp!! Thanks, brother. Coolest pics I've EVER seen on this site. I officially HATE my job now. Man... !!! Who's the faller??... Yerself, er someone else? Whoever he is... that guy can stinkin cut. Hey... that ground looks pretty steep in that first shot. Did you guys have to spring-board that first stump for the far-side, or were you all-good from the ground just reaching up high??

It all depends on the tree and conditions. In the case of the single seat, I thought I might be able to wedge it, so I tried and it was gonna be tough to wedge, so I stuck a ram in it. In the case of the wide seat, I thought one ram would get it. The ground falls off steep behind this tree, so standing below it to saw out a single seat would be a pain, much easier to stand beside it and poke the long bar in and saw out a big seat. If I ended up needing two rams the other one was right there and all I would have had to do is slip it in. This tree was wedgable, but rans were right there and much easier. We only had a little over 5000psi on the guage, and you can go up to 10k psi no problem. So short of a hurricane wind wasnt an issue. For these conditions and this tree.

No spring boards on these, just reached over head some. Used boards here some, and quite a bit when I cut in Alaska. I was the faller. Partner Joe bucking for me. Id take you up on the help, but were about done with the big guys and back to regular 24" type stuff.
