A fun technique... I did that with a rather large tulip poplar (appx 100 ft tall, and about 45" dbh) on an estate across the river from the original DuPont gunpowder factory:

Mine was because the top was hung in another tree. Wouldn't fall any other direction and was dead long enough to not want to climb higher. Tight drop zones where the top leans back too hard, long skinny tops... Plenty of reasons to have that tool in your tool bag

I forget to try it constantly.. I look back and say to myself.. Jeeeeez, I should have just folded it. Guess I like to just dice them up too much at times.
