I have looked at this tree three times now, no way to safely remove it. No crane, No bucket, No climbing.......Hickory, that has been bent over into other trees, cracked on three sides, over a primary line. Power company said "hell no"........they have surfed the book, most folks wig when they see it. No one wants to do it. If you could set a charge and blow the base it might work. Nearest house is 100yds. I'm thinking dynamite in the base and maybe on the trunk..Anyone ever done it......kinda like this

dbh is 38", I'll get pictures if I can. Leftover hurricane damage from 04'...still standing, but everyone is skeered. 13 households drive right under it everyday....I would be skeered too:\:

I've cut lots of hazard trees with powder. Never wrapped them always packed the face. Works when nothing else will. You don't want to use too high velocity stuff.

Who or what should I ask...I see it as a rare oppurtunity here....I wanna do it8)

I can't comprehend the 'no bucket' explanation when you say that 13 families drive underneath it every day. I guess I'm just dense or something. :|:

Very narrow road Brian. It's nuts...The tree is laying on three other trees. A bucket would have to set up under it.....crazy. The trunk is about 80' from the road. No crane set up or I would go for it. In addition, the consequences are a primary line being torn down. Other then that, folks are skeered. I would be too. The trunk is under so much tension it would be a death wish to cut it there. Not to mention the shat it's stuck in........

Go to your USFS S.O. If thats a nogo, then contact your local quarry, either they will have a blaster, or steer you in the direction of one. Before we went to war, it was fairly easy to get various explosives for stump work, road building, etc. I have no clue as to changes if any in sales to the average contractor.
been a good 10-12 years since I got to blow anything up, and yes it is fun.

I know.......blowing it up, then cleaning up the carnage won't be bad. If I cant....I dont know what to do......most folks have passed the job over. go figure. It would be one for the memory banks though;)

thanks...we have a quarry just down the road.....I hope this one happens, ....for fun ya know8)

i looked into learning blasting so i could bid on forest service jobs. you have to regester with the state fire marshall, ATF, have to have guards near the expolsives on the job site, special containers for job site temporary storage, an approved bunker to store it in when your not using it, serious record keeping. i wasnt thwarted till i couldnt get anyone to call me back about training. theres a place here called austin powders that manufactures the stuff nd they wouldnt even call me back. i like the chopper idea8)

I was thwarted...I looked into the process back in the 90's...even before 9-11 it was a very laborious process to be able to buy and learn to use explosives. We had beaver dams that needed to be blown...I cut them with a chain saw...only once...cut chunks out, let the water off the beaver pond (chainsaws in water make a great rooster tail mess of water and mud).

I think they just laughed that night as they rebuilt it.

My uncles used to blow up beaver dams and stumps...old days.

I work for a power company. Why won't they cut the power for 3-4 hours and clear the line so you can take care of this. Blasting the tree you are more than likely knock out the power any way. They cut lines to move houses all the time.

Pics, John, Pics! Like Brian -I don't get it. It is such a Big Hairy Deal then close the road and use bucket and crane. Helicopter sounds fun and expensive also. Explosives are exciting but if it has all the proximity issues that you are intimating then boom booms are probably the wrong route.

John, if you really are hard up for someone who does this sort of thing, just to talk to and pick their brain, I probably could come up with contact info on a tree blaster or two who have done work for the FS here in years past. It's been several years since I administered one of those contracts, but I'll hunt up a name and phone number if you want it. Drop me a pm or post here if so.

Need a specialist in blowing up wood, panthers suggestion is best. Guys that do this work are more than crazy so yall get rite along and hell do it for fun. NC hires a beaver damn remover. Go thru your local gamewarden for a contact, just tell um you got a beaver damn. I used to go on missions with the guy in the NG, once he got a call from his wife that his truck (which stored the demo) was broke down or she was driving it. He left the mission ASAP!
