In SoCal….live oak. No bug holes. Just red sap I think. IMG_2059.jpeg

We’ve had drought and lots of them die from bugs.

Appears to have been “sweating”. Still had brown leaves, solid wood with moisture.

I'd go more toward a defensive weapon produced locally by the wounded tissues to close the opening and bury an eventual boring larva. The cherry produces a gum which can look like an extruded form like that if there's a well defined opening, but more a globular if it's a deep and contaminated wound. It can be seen on the apricot trees too where some insects bore the twigs.
