As I drove to work this morning my son, Alex, a fireman, called me to say the city he works for was having an equipment auction at the "barn" where City eqpt is maintained...it could be for most anything...cars, lawn mowers, blah, blah. I told him I might get by but really had too much going at work and didn't think I really would.

About a 1/2 hour later he called me at the office and said, "Don't bother, there isn't much here to look at." THen he called back a few minutes later and said, "I just bought a fire truck!"

I said, "Alex....do you need some counseling???"

He has been a firefighter for about 1.5 years now and seems to be loving it. He was late getting home this morning...they had a fire at 3:30 AM, got it out, got to the station about 6:30AM....he gets off at 7 AM. He called me at 7:08 AM and said he would be late, they were headed to another fire...two on the same shift is real unusual.

The 3:30 fire was a pretty involved house fire, lots of damage. The second one was a car that caught fire in the driveway and set the front of the house on fire..they saved that house.

Who knows, maybe those two fires inspired him somehow. Whatever the case, when he found out the 1967 retired City of Austell fire truck was for sale he stepped in to listen. There were a few bids for $125, then $150, then $200 he just piped in at $500 and it was SOLD!!!

It runs, brakes did not work. He filled the master cylinder with fluid pumped it a few times and now has brakes. One of the other bidders has already offered him $200 for the big siren.

So, here are some pictures...

And here he is with one of his firefighter buds...

The maintenance guys said it has a new pump in it...maybe I'll get a chance to finally man a fire hose for real. :D

Hayden, his 3 year old son, has not seen it yet..we are waiting for that event..should be a lot of fun.

I'd be all over that... 500.00 man! Lucky guy!
That thing would come in seriously handy on some burning I do..
I bet Hayden is gonna love it!

Hahaha....had not thought of that angle...only YOU would come up with that, Stephen.

I hope to get some pictures of Hayden when he finally gets to see it, Carl.

(BTW...send me the bill for the damages for the Fireman room at the GTG...you covered that, bro.) (note: "damages" = share of bill...I don't think we tore anything up...well, maybe the toilet from when Dave was taking care of business...)

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting to do that. I'll try and remember to do it tomorrow, I'm headed to bed for an early departure tomorrow for a comp.

Hayden already has experience using a fire truck to water a garden. The firefighers had a garden planted at the station last summer...sometimes they would use the engine to water it. I still cannot believe he didn't turn the hose on me.

And now I have indulged my picture fest enough.

That truck is only three years older than my first bucket truck; same Ford cabover chassis. Let me know if he needs any info.

Great offer, Erik...I'll let him know.

10-4 on Levi...that's a 3 year old's dream, playing with a firehose...Seth would love it, too...most of US probably still want to do that!

Often times old outdated fire equipment goes pretty cheap .A local tree service had a 90 foot ladder truck they bought for about 2 thousand bucks and used on rare occasions . They most likely paid for itself on about two jobs as it could reach most trees sitting on the road side and could reach right over a house .

Generally speaking most fire equipment stuff has had good maintainance too .

As I understand it,fire departments are mandated to replace equipment after a certain period of years irreguardless of the shape it's in .

I might add for those interested they might look up an on line auction site called gov deals .com .All kinds of stuff that might be of interest .

What's he going to do with it, Gary?

He jokingly said he might drive it to work.

I don't think he has any specific plans for it...just tool around in it once in awhile for now. It was an opportunity that suddenly appeared...he didn't even know buying the truck was a possibility...I don't think he had ever considered getting one until this chance came up.

He did say he was going to try to get them to include a good length of fire hose that they recently took off of it...so he probably has some ideas I don't know about yet.

He just left his house to go drive it home...Hayden and I are waiting for him to get back.

Wow, that's pretty cool!

Those pictures of Hayden watering with the fire hose are just awesome.

i smell parades and rides on an old truck a coming...that thing is gonna be a fun recreational vehicle
take it to the park, picnic and water fight
very cool,
