... You guys man... I got out there... Oh my goodness, man... The tree was maybe 50' tall, AND you had a quite decent, rock solid overheadish tie from another tree. The tree itself was UNBELIEVABLY solid, given the stump. Arbutus's are miraculous...

Yes I saw the 400'+ fir. Nice. Though too bad they didn't let the monster stand but of course they figured the big trees would never run out, can't blame them.
It's an oak. There is about an 1/8" stretch that cover 15 years!! I have started collecting old small trees that were removed. I have a norway spruce that is about an inch and a half diameter six inches above dirt level that was 47.
I've heard a bit of dendrological speculation... educated folks setting theoretical limits for tree-height, based on more speculation about nutrient transport systems reaching a threshold after which it becomes impossible for parenchyma cells to overcome gravity, and etc... They (scientists) tend to set the limit right around 400', which, to me, seems like pure moonshine... heck: the foresters down under 150 years ago recorded Blue Gum Eucs growing down in deep valleys that they had measured at 505'. The stinkin Jed Smith Reds are dang-near strartin ta push 400' right freakin now. I'm thinkin... God only knows how tall a REALLY wind-protected pig could get given the right conditions. Then again... Ya gotta draw the line somewheres... There was a feller runnin around youtube here a while ago, claimin Devil's Tower was nuthin but an old petrified stump that the Nephilim had fallen. (Musta been a conventional face, of course.) I'd be a shade nearer convinced if an areal photograph revealed a nice strip of holding-wood running across the top.
Fun little Redwood right on the road. Tight lie, and hanging over a water tank. Also took a trip to Baileys on Tuesday and brought home a new Lucas 10-30!
Thanks, but all the credit goes to the photographer. He lives in my hood and is a pro video/photographer, and he loves watching me kill trees! He has go-pros, drones, 3D and 360 degree cameras. I have a few pretty big removal late this summer, so hopefully we can make some cool vids. I have to admit it's been fun messing around with it. Makes me appreciate August's vids even more!
i've seen and worked with a lot of beautiful wood over many years of furniture making, but still there is one that sticks out in my mind, a table top in someone's house made from Redwood. Just looking at it I'd get lost.
It is beautiful wood, and the good old stuff is just incredible. I have spent my whole life climbing and cutting it, and it is still my favorite tree. The big Spruce I worked with in Alaska when i was younger was also really amazing.
