I watched the last half hour of this movie....I think it's called "The pistol: The birth of a legend", or something like that.

It was really good, set in the mid 60s when he was in high school. I bought a used VHS at Amazon for a couple bucks to see the rest of it and cuz it looks like one my kids would like to see also. Really good story. I read about the rest of his life on Wikipedia.
