I have the older style ones. They are stiff. These have removable backpack straps, which are nice to have. Waterproof, important for this climate. Seem tough.

I climb with a softer rope bag. Removable straps would make it more suitable for climbing. Mine are also larger, I think.

Yes, a stiff truck tarp type material is used as the base and sides.
