Any good? Im thinking its time for a mini in the spring but Im curious here and now if those lewis winchs are worth a damn for moving material. I have a 288xp that doesnt leave much anymore. I figured id use that as a donor.

Talk to me folks.

I have no experience with them however I talked to a guy who tried one and he said it was painfully slow. Save your money and get a mini....

I got my Simpson Capstan that mounts to a powerhead for $650. I haven't used it much yet. I was able to 2:1 my chipper into a backyard that I wouldn't have been able to get in otherwise, and skid some smaller 20' logs with it. Matching the right rope to it is important. I intend to use it to be pulled up on DdRT or use it SRT on a side by side climbline and haul line.

Roger B has one. He's had it for a while, I believe.

Limited compared to a mini, but also way, way cheaper than a mini, trailer, tow vehicle, and takes up much less room. A different tool.

No spooling and unspooling the cable, no jaggers (burrs), no loss of power as the wraps build up.

Probably the same minor lawn damage to choker brush and drag (or maybe less with less trips) as hand dragging brush.

Could help you to make the money faster to get that mini, maybe.

Reg Coates has the honda powerhead Simpson Capstan, and seems to have used it effectively.

I have an upcoming job, hopefully, where its view pruning on a waterfront property, read uphill to the road across a septic system. I can have one guy down below setting chokered brush piles, and one above running the capstan, with a haulback for the rope/ choker.

We'll see how that works out.

Less tired = more productive and maintaining good judgment.

I guess you aren't looking for such heavy duty, but a friend asked me to order the 5000lb. (line doubled) capacity Honda powered capstan winch for his company, the one Bailey's sells for around $1800. I've used it a few times with him when we were pulling up logs on steep terrain in the woods, and it is a great device.

Lewis are well built. I have owned a few over the years. Really nice on steep ground for skidding brush and logs up a hill. I haven't missed my last one as I have had a mini for several years now and have a chipper winch. If you have a good deal on one and are not geared up with other equipment I'd say grab it

Slow and effective ... have used the Lewis ... own a Rule wich ... turns into a not favorite to operate rig. Anchor dependant as well ... for versatility a snatch block redirect or double back and many otner trees to anchor too-

Im not looking to own one in place of a mini. I just wondered if they were worth having in my arsenal. For fishing material up steep terrain mostly.

They are useful. I have pulled a quite a bit of firewood with mine some of it in the 20" by 15' range with a block powered by a husqy 372.

I've used mine (paired to a Stihl 038AV) for pulling over large trees, moving logs, and once used it to assist a log-truck up a snow-covered road as his tires were bald.
It is slow, but gutsy.
