I have seen this before but not to the extent this Pin Oak had it. This pic was taken over 60' up the tree is easily a 100 years old.

Tree is is pretty healthy for it's age.

There where 5 areas in the tree like this. It looks like some thing is in wood?

I'm stymied by it.
 
It looks like something looking for food made those marks. A bird perhaps.
 
If it was a row, following the grain of the branch I would guess cicada, but these are the wrong direction.
 
A previous arborist who wanted to have fun giving some headache to the following climber ?:D

You know, that same thought crossed my mind. The previous climber gigged the crap out of this tree with thir hooks.
I mean not that big of a deal to me if some one hook climbs.....But for crying out be nice about it

I wish it was a better picture. But if you look closely you horizontal tearing or opening of the bark.
