Hancock elm

English elm planted by John Hancock, believed to be the oldest english elm in the western hemisphere. An expert from Davey was out today to confirm its age, which was approximated at 240 years.

That is really cool. What kind of plant health care has been done to help keep that tree around for so long? Anything out of the ordinary besides fertilizing?

Intensive crown reduction pruning every three years or so, injections for DED and elm bark beetle, fert.

Prior to that LOTS of cavity fills! As the tree gets bigger the old cement tends to fall within the tree....

The gentleman in the orange hard hat has been working on this tree for seventy years...he was 14 when he began.

wow, that's pretty cool. working on one tree for that long would really give one the opportunity to examine the long term effects of your tree work.
