OK so I love my Morbark 17 but about every 2 years it sucks the seals out of the turbo since it is a loosing battle trying to keep the filter clean. So I got to thinking can I retro fit it with a supercharger and do away with the turbo?? Any thoughts ?? Carl?? Andy??

GO down the page and find the Pre Cleaners.

You still have to have Clean air or you will crater the rest of the engine! Chip trucks and chippers collapse the air filter all the time and allow dust into the cylinders which causes wear! Best to put a Pre-cleaner on the air filter.

Sorry to reply without being asked! LMAO

Yeah, it'd be cheaper to set up 2-3 Donaldson's (2-3x the filter area) and put a filter minder on it than it would be to convert it to a super charged.

The 2-3 thing is kinda a joke, they should have something of proper size. A filter minder goes a long ways. My big grinder is still running on the original turbo, super dusty environment, 2325 hours.

You can pull the turbo, but will loose a lot of power.
Super chargers on diesel engines aren't efficient enough to be worth while, 25% of the power it makes goes to the supercharger, turbo is free power and the engine is run at a constant RPM anyway so the benefits or the supercharger are lost.
Do you have a dual stage air filter? Large paper element on the outside, small foam element on the inside with a large metal can? The can is designed to catch all the big stuff in the bottom of it, then the two filters get the rest. Maybe a seal is out in the can? Might be a loose hose on the intake side between the air filter and the intake?
How is the exhaust pointed? I had a Volvo wheel loader, came in with a blown turbo, put a new one on, it ran fine, sent it home. Came back a week later, blown turbo again. Boss was all up in my ass! Replaced it again. The boss and I watched them load it, then it hit me! They were loading it backwards on the trailer, the exhaust tip was turned to the back of the machine, air was turning the turbo as it went down the road! As stupid as it sounds, never saw that machine again!
Check the simple stuff first, keep the oil changed and clean, make sure there isn't air getting in anywhere it's not supposed to, keep the air filters clean, these things will suck air anyway they can!

Andy, good point about the turbo being wind driven (spinning while engine is shut down). Rain caps are good for preventing that, if they are properly installed!!!

No, ive been slacking on it a bit as my other chipper is working. Talked to a "turbo" dude and he thought I have another problem such as a pcv valve issue as he says turbos rarely leak into the intake:?. Put compressed air into the oil filler cap and it came out the breather pipe. Dont know, looking for a cheap turbo to try......

Ive got a job in a back yard next week and it would sure be easier getting a 6k chipper back there than a 9k:|:

That sounds like BS to me, every turbo I've replaced leaked into the intake, that's how you knew it was leaking! Black smoke tells the tale!
The air test did as it should have, not even sure what that was testing for, a blockage in the oil flow down?
Sounds like it might be time to unload it anyways!

I didn't think superchargers were very good for dirty conditions. What is it your turbo does when the seals go out?

Yeh its kinda spooky when you cannt shut it down and you know it is running on its own oil and you dont know how much oil its already burned:|:

Andy, I really like this old POS need to figure out how much air the turbo pumps and get another one......
