JP,

Be sure you have considered the ATF angle...I am pretty sure you crossed a few lines with your experiment.

I totally understand and like what you are attempting but there may be some issues...especially post nine-eleven.

If you know a SWAT demo man up there he might be a good source of info...and maybe trained help. A good friend of mine was of such talent and always had an ammo can of Charley-four with him...he called it the "universal key"...said it would "open anything".

I don't want this thread to cause you any trouble.

Making explosives or using them with out a licence can be a serious offense. But man is it fun.

Shaped charges, like in building demo. Wonder how hard it would be to get hold of.
Should cut it right in half. Might need a little more prep to keep contained.

Before Oklahoma City you could get shaped charges with nothing but an in-state driver's license in Alabama. I don't know about the Carolinas.

Black powder is too slow, but you could try smokeless powder. Easy to buy, excellent gas expansion, moderate velocity. Tamp it the same way you did the black.

who swings first?
Swing? U dont know what your talking about. The 2 fellas using that axe would always start about 50 yrds. back from the tree in question......

So they they could a running start:D

I doubt smokeless would work.

The best bet would be small 1/2" nipples with end caps, drill a hole through one and insert the fuse (which is fairly easy to make). Turn the charge sidways (the ends typically blow out from what I hear) and you should have as good of a chance as any.

How much wood do you need to cut?

Herculese & Alliant 2400 will work. Winchester 296 also will work for this just fine. The trick is in how you package it.The pressure has to be able to build. The blast will only be as strong as what the container can hold prior to to rupturing.

Carl is right in his statement about facing them sideways. But you need to make sure the side facing the tree is weaker than the ends of the container. It would help to drill the holes at a long angle to set the charges, favoring the the heart wood, not straight in. Also, setting all charges on one side can be benificial at times........... Having to go back & reset can suck.
Thats all I know :D

Try a chainsaw,they work great .

Now my favorite story of two dummys from Spencerville Ohio and one large offending oak stump .

These two wizards tried several stcks of 30 percent dymamite on this oak stump, just blew out some dirt .Then tweedle dum says to tweedle dee why not ammonium nitrate ferilizer and diesel fuel .

Well the two geniuses mixed up a batch of about 2 sacks, two hundred pounds .They bored a bunch of holes and set the charge off with another stick of 30 percent .Launched the damned thing, blew out the windows in the house, the neighbors house and nearly gave the preachers wife a heart attact .The poor lady was setting on the toilet at the time and thought she had a gas attack .

Well after that stump had rised nearly to the moon it fell, gravity you know .Right smack through the roof of a barn, through the hay mow directly on top of a then new John -Deere 4020 and broke it right into . They still talk about that incident 25 years later .:D

I figure the differences in burn rates really won't matter so long as it's pistol powder.

I've heard the ends come off with gusto using 296/H110 or Blue Dot.

Ive heard its all in how they are made & how the ends are attatched. Threaded ends & welds can be stronger than the "steel" itself.

Al, this tree is bad based on the description. The top is busted out but still attached, laying in another tree....Al, while I don't completely understand the situation, I have an appreciation for No Bivy, his thoughts & feelings.
He has been good people here. So I choose to give this rascal the benefit of my wondering on this topic.......He clearly stated his purpous some time ago......Just to do it & have fun. That in my book makes for a pretty fair fella. I think any can appreciate that.
That story you told AL, just ripped my pants:lol:
