I have a couple large (30-36” dbh) trees on the property where large sections of the canopy came down during storms. One is a cherry and one is an American beech. The canopy sections were hollow and full of carpenter ants. If the tops look like this, is it fair to assume the trunks look like this also? Does the hollowing always start at/around ground level and work it’s way up?
