Aircraft & Aviation

I missed the fly in this year. :( Had soccer that day. The boys were kind of torn about it. Airplanes, helicopters and gliders or soccer.... :/:
Team spirit and all that won over.

Warbirds are great. Pinnacle of propeller driven planes.

My wife just gave me a picture book about warbirds last week, so I've been drooling over pictures of Mustangs, Zeros, P-38s and all the rest.:)

I have picture books like that :)

This is one of my other favourite warbirds. The highest production number of any military aircraft ever built - The Ilyushin IL2.
The original ground attack tank killer.

My Grandmother worked on building the P-39 Airacobra. The engine was behind the pilot with a driveshaft running between his legs. The Russians used that model for a tank killer also. I have a sketch book she made when she was getting training on assembly. I should donate it to the local museum dedicated to local aviation.

Saw this video tonight, thought I'd put it here. Hope it works.

The second one is how they do it. Go full screen.

Cool pics, Ed. Being a machine gunner in an open cockpit seems like it would be a pretty wild thing to do. Those IL2s have a rather mean look about them. Did it say if Ms. Yegorova can cook?

Jay, the rear gunners job was usually filled by convicts. They dont matter so much. But yes, it does have a mean look.

It, along with the Hawker Typhoon and the Mosquito 'Tsetse' (like a mosquito but stings harder) were the original Ground Attack aircraft. Nimble dogfighting is fine, but you only kill your enemy's equivalent dogfighter craft. The ability to destroy his armour columns from the air is far more devastating. Had we known this before the war, we would have likely annihilated the panzer columns as the came through the Ardennes.

The true successor to these craft is the Fairchild A10.

Jay, the russians didn't distinquish between men and women when it came to being soldiers.

Some of the snipers with the highest acclaimed kills are Russian women who served during WW2.

was my use of " distinquish" corect by the way?

One Finn, anyway!

So my spelling was off ( which REALLY pisses me off, doesn't hardly ever happen) but the use was correct?

And by the way, we feel the same way about aircraft.
I love the Warthog!

Didn't know about the "Tsetse Mosquito" though.

Here it is on video.<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/M00f5RxhxLY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I love this place. It makes me more knowledgeable every day.

It seems like a telling study could be done on snipers. Being in that kill mode all the time must surely affect one's psyche. I had a buddy who was a Marine sniper in Vietnam, but he never made it home to see how he was doing. Killed by small arms fire in Quang nam province,12/07/68.

Thought I'd put this here instead of the news thread.

Twenty iconic Spitfire aircraft buried in Burma during the Second World War are to be repatriated to Britain after an intervention by David Cameron.

Forty years later, his Supermarine Spitfire P9374 re-emerged from the muddy coastline, and now it has been painstakingly rebuilt by the Aircraft Restoration Company.
