Cool story. Genes are a funny thing. You know, the reason I compared you to him was simply that I see you as a personification of the rather old fashioned tem: "Yankee ingenuity".

Yes, the two ends of the sling were simply knotted together. That held up fine. I have been writing back and forth with Samson, trying to get their take on what happened. I started out telling them that I wasn't trying to blame their product, since we loaded it past WLL, but simply trying to...

No Al, he was the kind of person who knew everything about mechanical/ practical things. That is how I see you. It was meant as a compliment:)

Al, were you ever a Connecticut yankee at king Arthur's court? Maybe in a former life. Because as long as I've known you, you have reminded me of Hank Morgan, like no other :)

My problem is that shipping stuff across the Atlantic costs an obscene amount, unless you go big. So I have a deal going where Richard and I get together with a few select competitors, most of them former apprentices and buy in bulk. We do it once about every 2 years, and by ordering about...

I just went and remeasured the burial length of the same type sling as the one that broke. It is 35", sorry. Why can't we all just do it in centimeters, like civilized people!!! I have one old folding rule in inches from when my wife and I lived in Cali 23 years ago, but it works opposite of...

    Broken sling

Can you explain the difference? Like I said, I don't know Jack about splicing and Richard doesn't answer his phone. EDIT: He just answered. It is a full bury and it is 35" long on a 3/4 inch sling.

There was no tag on any of those slings. But I do have them on the ones we got from Bailey's this year.

    Broken sling

No can do. We can't get it here and Bailey's don't sell in bulk. So for us it is cheaper to buy ready made from Bailey's when we do our biannually order.

What is a waterproofing tag? Dave, what I'm trying to learn from this, since I don't splice,( Richard handles that or Anders, no need for me to learn.) is whether I have been an absolute fool going happily through life, thinking I knew for an absolute fact that a splice is always stronger than...

Is this better, Dave? I just measured the bury on another sling like it, it is 23" long. I don't know who spliced it, I bought it from Bailey's already spliced. I assume they got it that way from Samson.

Here is a picture of a similar sling and the pulled out ,broken eye. After it broke, they used the sling to simply tie the block to the forwarder and pulled it free that way. So the force applied was not enough to break a sling with a knot in it, but enough to destroy the spliced eye. To me...

    Broken sling

I'll take a picture of another of the slings tomorrow and post. It didn't break the eye, but pulled it out, so fiber compression didn't really figure into the thing. I'm learning a LOT from this. Mainly that next time, I'll break out the hard rigging. I just hate to carry that into the woods...

    Broken sling

Dave, I was hoping you'd join in, since you have been doing breaking tests on stuff like this. "almost new" means bought 3 years ago and sitting in a box ever since. This sling has not been used for anything, it is way bigger than what we normally use. In fact Richard has been getting on my ass...

    Broken sling

It is the largest sling they sell to arbos. It is made for that block, the block being just as overdone as the sling. Which is why I'm somewhat freaked that it broke. I mean, the sole reason we have slings and blocks that size ( besides us being gear freaks, of course!) is for that one job...

Here is a drawing. Sorry, but if I had artistic traits, do you think I'd have become a dumb logger!

    Broken sling

No, it was holding the big DMM block and the other end was tied to the loader. I would have expected it to break at the knot tying it to the forwarder, not at the eye splice holding the block. I'll have to do a drawing of the set-up, I think. Peter, if you double up a 3200 kg winch line, you...

    Broken sling

No, Al , the Tirfor pulls 3200 kilogrammes. Double that and you have smewhere in the vicinity of 15ooopds. Also, when a sling is rated to 44,500 pds, isn't that the breaking strength of the spliced eye? Otherwise the rating is worthless, since it relies on the buyer having the knowledge to...

    Broken sling

The sling was tied to the forwarder. Big DMM block was in the eye of the sling with a dyneema ropeg going through it that was tied off to a tree in one end and to the winch in the other. The weird thing to me was that it was the spliced eye that broke, not the knot tying the sling to the...

    Broken sling

I'm bedridden with the flu, but the boys got a call from a logging operator, who's forwarder was stuck in an inaccessible place. The service he usually uses to pull him out couldn't get in there, so could we please try and drag the big tirfor in there and see if we could get him unstuck...
