    Cutting bushel is hard!

A bushel is a thousand board feet. We often also cut by the ton. If you're getting paid based on volume, then you are busheling.

    Chain grinder?

Silvey SDM4. Much better than the swing arm versions of silvey and simmington, imo. SDM4 has been the benchmark around here for decades. Not made anymore. At last production they were around $1800 new. I'd expect to pay that for a used one now. Mine was $600 used 25 years ago.

    Sprocket on bar tip shattered

Blown tips are common. If you put another tip on it, be sure to make sure the rails are clear. Sometimes a bearing will lodge between the rails.

    Wanting a new bar

Do Stihls have bar plates? Thats one thing to look at.... I'm a husky guy.

    Humidity rules for logging?

You bet. We always try to find something closer to the ocean come late summer. I been browsing here off and on. Been super hunting focused last few years.

    Humidity rules for logging?

It is indeed here in western Oregon at least. I cut timber here and it is always an issue late in the summer when we are on a level 3.

    Cable core lanyard stopper knot?

Just a thought here. The cable cores I buy at the local logging supply only have one rated eye. The other eye is not rated for life support, just there to make a clean finish on the end of the lanyard I guess. Don't know about the lanyard in question, just thought I'd throw that out there.

    Stihl 500i

Just what I got started with, dad cut timber with em before me. Lotsa stihls in the woods here too.

    Stihl 500i

Aye Stump, I would assume so also, although it seems strange that we haven't heard some news from husqvarna. Dealer here has had a 572 I've been wanting to demo for a couple months now. Husqvarna shipped it with half wraps and hasn't seen fit to get the local dealer some real handle bars for...

    Stihl 500i

Stig, Thank you for the review. I am anxious to look this saw over when it comes to the Pacific northwest. I would be even more interested in a 90cc version, or even 100cc if it's the right weight. As a life long husky guy it would be hard for me to switch, but if it's that much better I...

    Tight spot Take down

Yup, you got it. Cutters aka fallers cut em down, then the loggers move em. Guess we're all called loggers generally. Kinda like all you tree guys are arborists, but only some of ya are climbers. Cheers.

    Tight spot Take down

Cory, I do a couple dozen tree jobs a year. I cut timber for a living. Falling and bucking timber out in the woods.

    Tight spot Take down

Learned yet another tactic from one of your videos Reg. Many thanks. Down here in Oregon loggers typically call a grand fir a "white fir." That or "piss fir" because of all the water that sometimes comes out of them when falling. The big ones sometimes piss all over ya, stinks.

On-saw sharpening vs off-saw sharpening - do you do both?

I've got a silvey sdm4. Learned on dad's which is the same. I usually have 3 or 4 ground up each morning and change em when they get dull. Usually run 3 chains every 2 days, but always have an extra or 2 in case I screw up and run one in the dirt. Never file anything but rakers. Ground...

    Chainsaw Dawgs! (Falling Spikes)

We usually try to get away from the stump. That is unless the ground is so steep and loose that moving could cause one to lose footing and slide down into harms way. I put longer factory dogs on my 562. When I bought a 550 I had em put the same dog on it, had to grind on it just a bit as I...

Theres two of us in there. Small part of what we cut this week. We usually get at least an acre per man per day. At times we cut twice that. We have to buck the big ones. You can see some fell side hill in that first pic, those are bucked.
