... I buy new mostly ... but have extremely good luck with useds at my dealer over the years ...I have a fondness for certain models (balance. Power to weight ratio...) have found some old but hardly used gems ... just bought a 262XP , have grabbed two 162's , and put a few bucks into the transfer station 61.... is there something to the older models ... ? ...I must be getting old

I picked up a used 262xp myself recently. Willard wrote so highly about them. Be mindful, they do run hot as a lot of people say. Instead of melting the top cover, better to trim off the front part, or drill some holes for the heat from the muffler to dissipate. I like the very high chain speed of the 242xp.

I've got a couple homelites that I think are older than me in the garage. I'm going to try to get them running over the winter. Old stuff is neat.

I suppose it just depends on what you use a saw for .There are some who are slowly amassing a collection of 020 and 200T's simpley because the quit making them and they are great trim saws not soon to be replaced with a high performer such as they .

Most of my small collection were either free or very inexpensive .Some would be considered boat anchors and some still highly regarded icons of chainsawdom .

So then you get to value ,what's it worth ? Lets take an old icon, Stihl 038 Mag .I'd say 225-250 depending .So now it needs a set of seals.35 bucks some might say .Not quite so fast buckeroo .A shop charges 50-60 bucks an hour to do repair work often from a flat rate book . Old Al gets just the same and now that 200 plus 038 mag is now worth about 75 -100 tops .Depends on how you look at it I guess .

Tell me more on the 162's in the first post. I'm thinking of picking up a jred 630 super which I was told like a 162. I have no experience with those.

Also I cant find anything different in a 630 and 630 super. You guys know anything different?

I only know the 66 262 266 268 272 somewhat.

Collecting. Is it an obsession? I have known avid collectors who, after many years, gave up their collections. I guess it could start to feel futile after a while, for some. I'm obsessed with taking pictures.

From my perspective, really old saws suck hairy moose lips . But a somewhat older model in proper shape, like an 066, 064, or an 044, in good shape, can truly make a sawyer smile. For me, I'm not thinking like a collector, I'm thinking of better power to weight performance before EPA gutted the dang things, not nostalgia.

Some of the improvements of modern saws are wonderful...don't get me wrong. As an example, I love my 361...smoothest runner in my fleet. And it's near impossible to beat the P to W of a 200 rear handle for light work around the property.

But the 064 and 044 are the ones I love to run, no doubt about it .

What happens at least to some is once people find out you do collect the things next thing you know you are up to your hip pockets in them .They've been tripping over the things for years and are only too happy to be shed of them .

I 've got some I've got running well and maybe just tested and never ran again .It gets so you might have half a dozen you use and the rest are just shelf queens .

The month of November I think it was around 15-18 dead trees I removed and used two saws .An 038 AV and an 024 which were the perfect size considering the size of the work .

The only old saw I have is a Jonsey 70e that I bought for $35. It has a 20" bar and a 8 pin rim.

I figure that about any kind of hobby thing that involves maintenance, like working on old saws, is good for the soul. One way to be in touch with the world is by working on stuff.

I think you may be correct. It is kind of nice working on something you don't have to depend on for income.
