Can anyone help me ID this? Unique bark I believe. I like the scaling pattern. Not in leaf at this time. Located in Maryland

The first one I think of is persimmon. But when I blow it up it almost looks scaly which would not be persimmon.

Persimmon was also my first impression due to the cobbled, alligator-skin bark. But (Black gum, Tupelo, Sour gum) ‘Nyssa sylvatica’ is likely, as it appears somewhat lighter in color than persimmon.

Thanks for the guidance. I have one of these on our property too, I believe. The canopy of this one was not natural so I didn’t take a picture. I’ll start digging in to the names you laid out for me. Much appreciated!

Dendritic s ... dormant hardwoods I.D. , bark , silhouette , and twig (if one is an easy grab) ... or wait for leaves ! (my own material cracks me up)
