Tie regrooving

The tire groover that I saw the crane op using, was cutting rather narrow grooves, on the order of 1/8" wide. Are grooves that narrow very effective? There was certainly a lot of extra rubber on those large tires.
 
The ones I saw back in the day only cut maybe 3/16" wide .With say racing slicks the tires were grooved to match track conditions .Any praticular sprint car might carry a dozen different tires .

This one is similar to the one I mentioned I used earlier, you can get blades up to about 1/2".

Here in the US, all positions can be regrooved.

It is mainly done for over the road trucks to get another 20-30K of tire life.
Once regrooved the casing is to thin to use for recaps.

I think in our trade, regrooving would serve little help. We need more traction than most OTR trucks.
