Absolutely. I like the length of boom. He has three 38 tons with the same length but capacity goes way down. The 40 ton grove actually has higher capacity at around 70’ radius because there is one less boom section to account for. I would be happy with this crane being the one I use. Rick is my sub of choice. He started in tree work and learned crane work with trees. His wife actually runs one of our biggest competitors. Never been a problem. He is a great operator and a true businessman when it comes to being a crane rental company. Also even though we are competitors, his wife and my boss (with my help) get along great. Anyhow I prefer that crane over mine. For this job it was the obvious choice. Where I was at in that pic was the easy part. You can see cuts on the oak to the left that were the reason I called him. Close to same radius, but PITA. It would’ve really sucked without him.

Does the 45127 have the jib? I see on the chart doesn't favor using it at a 100' radius, but negative rigging to pick with the crane is also powerfully slow.
Was the crane op test difficult? In CT it is notoriously difficult. My crane guy says, as an analogy, 'we all know to stop at stop signs but they want you to know the exact rule name and number of the law' which is obviously stupid. I think the crane union is behind it in order to keep the license as exclusive as possible.

The class wasn’t that hard but I’ve had a lot of operating experience for other machines and I was the go to “rigger” for the crane op when I was in construction.
@lumberjack chart is not favorable at 100’ but better than the 38/127. He has a jib but at that radius it’s no advantage. Jibs honestly get you more height but really limit your capacities (at least in my experience) I’ve only used a jib for one cut and we were right at the limit and in hindsight, should not have done it that way.

A dumb question-
If the jibs are not really an advantage and most decent operators never use them, why do they continue to carry them around on the side of the boom for years and years? Doesn't the extra weight affect their lifting limit, even down on the lower part of the boom? Why not just pull the jib off and stash it at the yard?

Different charts for different cranes, that specific crane you could get considerably more height at 100’, but your capacity decreases by ~40%.
Most cranes have a deduct for the jib being stowed .

We were too far away to use the jib. Maybe we could’ve but never even checked the charts.
And I don’t carry a jib on my crane. It does affect capacities having it stowed.
