I would use them on coconut palm back in Hawaii. Maybe a d-fir if I was doing a skirt lift (fun way to say removing lower limbs). Coconut palm is not a tree and never mends from being spike climbed.
 
Yes and no. It's unattractive the massive gouges that can occur from routine spike climbing but many palms are 30+yrs old on resorts and golf courses that don't care about the chatty look. The worst thing that can be done is the "rooster tailing". A skirt lift so extreme that it renders a plume like crown of only nearly vertical fronds sadly resembling a cock sure tail.
 
That tree on the right's pretty gnarly, but it isn't a bad look, at least from that small picture. If it doesn't really harm the palm, I might be inclined to use spikes if it were on my property.
