Just wondering how much louder ported saws are than stock. It looks like it doesn't affect ease of starting.

Btw, yeah new stock 372s are junk, the older ones were classics.

Say again, Cory!! I can't hear ya! As you now know for sure, after Reg spilled the beans, I've been running ported saws for nigh on to two decades..... An arb buddy, mostly consultant, but who has climbed for as long as I have, states that he knows the sound of my saws, from blocks away. No wonder I'm a bit hard of hearing! To wit:

Reg talks about me and my 372's in the vid. I've had a bunch.... my first, perhaps, was obtained on ebay. The seller was the famous John Lambert....who used to go by gypologger on arboristsite. We met at the Clearwater Revival in 2002. saw him again the next year. Saw guys from AS came from across two countries. That first 372 was ported by Walker's Saw Shop. About that same time, I had them port a 335 for me. (Turns out, 335/338's only need the muffler opened up) I'm not sure about now, but Walker's port work wasn't as involved as the work many saw modders do, which includes the work I had done by Dennis Greffard and Ed Heard, and others. Dennis hosted those two awesome log shows in Clearwater. He ported my 3120 way back then--2002, and a few other saws. it is still a beast, though it has needed a jug hone and new rings. The fastest 372 I ever had came from Ed Heard, used via a climber named Ken, who has since retired. It was tuned to near race level, and came with a pipe, which I never bothered to try out. The saw was very fast, but I didn't want to use it hard, say chunking a stem down or bucking firewood. Sadly, along with many other saws, it was stolen. The 3120 is featured in the "infamous" Squeeze Play, near the end of this vid, from 2002. Pardon my excited screams at the end of the drop.

Do it! I was under impressed with my 3120..until I had Dennis port it.

As far as your 372, there's a good chance the jug is fine. It may only need a careful cleaning up.. light sanding after applying muriatic acid to removed the fused aluminum, if in fact that is what happened. Then, a new piston, though sometimes it too is salvagable. New ring, for sure!

I'd try Jack..hotsaws (maybe goes by hotsaws 101 ) on youtube. I know his work is top notch. He's in No Cali. I know of no one in Wa that does the full meal deal. Woods Logging does light work... (Sedro Wooley) Dave Stice had them do some work for him.

My 372 is going to be rebuilt as a winter project. I plan on a new slug and jug it's pretty bad up in there. It took me a good half hour just to get it to move so I could look in the exhaust. I still can't pull it over but I fogged it pretty good and has been soaking for three weeks now. I have two other 372's (runners) and two 365's (runners but on the gender reassignment surgery list).

I was in touch with a guy about 20-30 miles south of me, but lost info (correspondence with him was on FB, referred from TH, IIRC). I could make a drive, and maybe get to learn a little more. Add it into a trip to Portland (would motivate me to go see friends).

A hand-off would ensure no damage, and quickest. Hard for me to get to the Post Office or FedEx (that's just me).

There's a lot of builders,some good some not so good .Although I've operated many done by others I've never had one done for myself .As it it's my hobby and I've had what I feel is success with but vowed I'd never do any for others ,way too much BS involved .
It's been some time since I've enhanced any for various reasons .Namely I don't have the time and my Monarch tool makers lathe is on the blink and I haven't even had the time to repair it .
You might consider Randy Evans AKA Mastermind on the net .Lives near Wartburg Tenn. and has a shop .Ed Heard makes a good saw also ,he's some place in Ontario .Dan Henry did okay too,he lives someplace in PA but I'm not sure if he even does anything these days .I used to talk to him several times a year and have no idea what's up with him or if he's even among the living any more,hope so .
