Barberchair isn't as much of a concern as you might think. A large straight tree was chosen for spars, cut your horizontal with the saw undermining the CG, chop out the rest of the face, move to the side and saw up the back cut. I have one of the "handsaws" as you call it. It's a 38" whip, takes two hands to run it.
Yes your heart is beating frantic like, but it's from the massive effort in topping a tree in that manner. Trust me.
