drilling

Fresh will make the chips pack up more, but fresh cuts/drills easier.

I'm speaking as a wood turner.

What are you making and what tools do you plan to use?

swedish fire log or norwegian candle.
Plan is to drill the tunnel in middle, then chainsaw it 3 or 8 times vertical.
Tools avaliable are a drill bit of 20 or 25mm, drill machine cheap one and chainsaws.
If I would find a easier way for lighting it maybe I would just chainsaw them.
Any ideas @stig ?

Is this for sale or personal use? For personal use, I just chainsaw them. It works fine. A hole in the middle would probably work a little better, and would provide more certainty for people who aren't good at building fires. Just thinking right now, you could make a hole ~1cm-2cm deep, and stuff it with noodles you've soaked in candle wax. That should make it easy for n00bs to get a fire going.

I've made a lot of those over the years, always just with a saw.

I build a little mini fire on top. A clump of pine needles, and some tiny twigs. Light them, and it catches on the log.

Just use a saw.

Pack the kerfs with some tinder or birch bark, anything flammable. Then just place a firelighter on the centre top.

A friend use to sell them at fancy country fairs. He used to take the noodles from the cuts, soak them in paraffin and then place in the top. Then all the customer had to do was put a light to the noodles.
